Abstract

Moniliformin is a fungal metabolite structurally characterized as the sodium or potassium salt of 1-hydroxycyclobut-1-ene-3,4-dione (1; Fig. 1). It was first isolated in 1973 from a corn culture that had been inoculated with Fusarium proliferatum, but that had been misidentified as the closely-related species Fusarium moniliforme, thus the name moniliformin (2). The metabolite is produced by at least 30 other Fusarium species (39). Of these, several species are particularly important pathogens of cereal grains throughout the world, F. proliferatum and F. subglutinans being the most important in corn.

Structural formula of moniliformin (sodium salt).
