Abstract

The molecular specificity that is attached to the quantification of an endogenous neuropeptide is an important experimental parameter (1), because the other analytical methods that are commonly used, such as radioimmunoassay (RIA), provide a very high level of detection sensitivity, but only limited molecular specificity (2). The purpose of this chapter is to describe the use of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) methods to increase the specificity of the qualitative and quantitative analysis of endogenous neuropeptides in human tissue extracts.
