Abstract
Hydrophobic proteins are vital components of every living cell. Often located in or associated with cell membranes, their functions vary from ion or molecule transport to cell recognition to signal transduction. Owing to their limited solubility in aqueous solvents, structural analysis by conventional techniques has been problematic. Moreover, studies of hydrophobic peptides from these and other proteins have found these materials to be equally difficult to analyze.
