Part of the book series: Methods in Molecular Biology™ ((MIMB,volume 61))

Abstract

A significant proportion of genetic disorders are caused by point mutations in proteins. Structural studies of these mutated proteins are now mostly carried out by genetic methods. Even so, mass spectrometry (MS) is a rapid and excellent method of mutation analysis, especially when sufficient amounts of the gene product are obtained. It is also useful for verifying the structure of recombinant proteins.
