Abstract

Electrophoresis is a technique whereby components move through an electrically conductive medium in response to an applied voltage gradient. All electrophoretic procedures resolve analytes on the basis of the analyte’s effective charge and/or molecular dynamic radius, but there are many modes of operation that provide separations exploiting hydrophobicity, chirality, complexation, specific affinity, and so on. By altering the physical and chemical interactions between analytes and the system, one has access to a surprisingly broad range of separation techniques.
