Abstract

Many problems of risk are intricately combined with interindividual issues such as: When is it justified to expose someone else to a risk? When is a social distribution of risks fair? But there are also many problems of risk that do not involve any interindividual issues. Some risks concern only the person who takes them. Sometimes an agent acts unselfishly in someone else’sinterest. A group of persons can consider joint risk-taking in a situation where both risks and benefits will be shared equally. In all these cases, we can discuss which risks to take or accept without attending to traditional moral issues of conflicts between persons. This and the following chapter are devoted to risk problems of that type. Interindividual issues will be treated in Chapters 6 and 7.
