Abstract

With the unfolding of the financial crisis in 2007–2009 many turned to China in the hope of finding a solution to the western world’s problems. This was something that might have been considered completely unthinkable just five years earlier. Chinese banks have clearly made rapid advances in recent years. The positive stance that western eyes ascribe to the Chinese banking system say as much about the observers as about those being observed. For this reason it is worth examining the system in some detail.
