Abstract
Musical theater in Taiwan has been importing Broadway musicals to stage various aesthetic styles. Most rely on translation, such as Kiss Me Nana by Godot Theatre, translated from Kiss Me Kate. Few are faithful presentations in English. Some are opera and film adaptations—Love Ends in Night Shanghai (2002) adapted from Alexandre Dumas fils’ La Dame aux Camelias, Running Angel (2005) adapted from the film Sister Act, and so on. Some are original—See the Sun (2000) on Taiwanese aboriginal ethnicity, and April Rain (2007), a Taiwanese musical on Hakka composer Deng Yu-Hsien’s love story during Japanese colonialization. Recent trends, Mulan (2011) on gender issues, Jolin and Pao’s multi-art (pop music and musical) PK (2015), and review of Hakka musical Xiangsi Nostalgia (2016) are provided.
