Abstract
Global production of bananas is estimated at around 48 million tonnes and of plantains around 27 million tonnes. Throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, bananas and plantains form an important part of the diet as a cheap source of energy. In parts of East Africa they are a staple food with average per capita consumption in excess of 100 kg/year.
