Abstract
This introductory address will cover the field of general observational methods applied in selenodesy to date. I do not plan to discuss details or results, but rather to give an outline of the various methods which can be used to determine the shape of the so-called selenoid. The interpretation of the results will be discussed in another session; and so will the details of the structures on the surface, which will be the subject of the last session on topography.
