Abstract
The climate of Egypt makes it a very favourable country for astronomical observations and an ideal place for a large telescope. It is only recently, however, that the erection of such a telescope has become possible. Since 1905 planetary and stellar observations had been dependent upon a 30-inch, f/5 telescope presented to Helwan Observatory by Mr. Reynolds, a past treasurer of the Royal Astronomical Society in London. Valuable work was performed with this instrument, but the Egyptian astronomers realised that its capabilities were strictly limited.
