Abstract

The continuum emission from the plane has been observed from the earliest days of radio astronomy: in the decade from Reber’s survey to 1958 there were 14 surveys at frequencies from 38 to 1390 MHz and with beamwidths of 25°down to 34′. These surveys blended most of the structure into a narrow ridge along the line of the Milky Way that, in the quadrant towards the centre, coincided with the flat, central layer of H I and helped to define our present system of galactic coordinates (Gum & Pawsey 1960).
