Abstract

Dystonia is considered a rare disorder, although recent data indicate that it occurs most commonly than previously thought. Dystonia is often misdiagnosed, mainly for other movement disorders or considered psychogenic. The recently published classification of dystonia allows to recognize the clinical features of patients affected by dystonia syndromes and to accommodate their phenomenology and etiology into a comprehensive classification scheme.

The new classification of dystonia provides a basis for clinical studies of the different dystonia syndromes.
