Abstract

Advances in somatic genetics for some years with higher plants as well have made it possible to complement conventional plant breeding by the acceleration of breeding through recombination of growing plants directly out of the products of meiosis (e.g. “anther culture”); the application of haploid cells for mutation and selection; somatic hybridization by fusion of protoplasts, transfer of organelles or isolated genetic material.
