Abstract

Nuclear interaction lines are produced when energetic nuclei (typically >1 MeV nucleon−1) interact with ambient matter. Such interactions have been observed from the Sun during strong solar flares, as has been extensively discussed in Chap. 5. Nuclear interaction lines are also expected from accreting compact stellar objects like white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, from supernova remnants, from the nuclei of galaxies, and from the interstellar medium.
