Abstract
In this Institute devoted to the reliability of electronic systems it is appropriate that we should spend a little time on mechanical systems because from time to time we hear comparisons drawn between the advances that have been made in understanding the reliability of electronic equipment and the relative stagnation which surrounds the reliability of mechanical equipment. Yet the fundamental basis of reliability is the same for both areas, and the differences in approach, in outlook, and in level of achievement is not always accepted. This lecture sets out to bridge the gap between these two distinctive areas and at the same time to draw attention to some special aspects of mechanical reliability. At the outset we should note that advances in the electronic field have really been made in electronic reliability and that the same factors which beset mechanical equipment also beset the mechanical reliability of electronic equipment. There would therefore seem to be some valid a priori evidence that mechanical and electronic reliability are controlled by fundamentally different factors, and not related to the approach of their respective practitioners.
