Abstract
Interest in the detection of anti-idiotypic antibodies in the HLA system and in the characterization of their immunomodulatory properties has been stimulated by the potential role of these antibodies in several clinical settings. These include the unexpected survival of HLA-mismatched kidneys transplanted in recipients with a history of humoral anti-HLA immunity (Reed et al. 1987 a, b; Burlingham et al. 1988; Rodey and Pelhan 1989), the beneficial effect of blood transfusions on the outcome of subsequent renal transplants (Opelz and Terasaki 1978; Persijn et al. 1979; Salvatierra et al. 1980; Sanfilippo et al. 1982; Cecka and Cicciarelli 1985; Glass et al. 1985; Salvatierra et al. 1985), and changes in the specificity of antibodies in the course of an anti-HLA immune response (Legrand et al. 1971; Curtoni et al. 1972; Ferrara et al. 1972; Amos et al. 1973; Carvalho et al. 1973).
