Antiproteases and Nonspecific Inflammatory Parameters in the Monitoring of Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract

During acute pancreatitis high concentrations of pancreatic enzymes are found in plasma, changes occur in the levels of plasma antiproteases and a brisk acute phase response results. Developments in various techniques of immunoassay have enabled many of these changes to be quantified using methods which can be adapted for use in the routine clinical biochemistry laboratory. The aim of this chapter is to review the current status of these assays in the management of patients with acute pancreatitis.
