Der Begriff Zivilgesellschaft hat in den letzten zwei Dekaden zahlreiche Deutungsversuche erfahren. Ein einheitliches Verständnis von Zivilgesellschaft hat dabei gerade die Politikwissenschaft nicht hervorgebracht. Vielmehr theoretisieren, definieren und operationalisieren Wissenschaftler den Begriff in ihren Analysen höchst unterschiedlich. In einem Punkt dürfte aber unter den meisten Sozialwissenschaftlern Konsens herrschen: Die Bürgeroder Zivilgesellschaft ist eine zentrale Erfolgsbedingung von Demokratisierungsprozessen.
