Practical Psychology in Medical Rehabilitation

Abstract

Obesity is a major problem in the United States affecting more than one-third of adults (35.7 %) and approximately 17 % of children and adolescents. Obesity in adults with disabilities is 58 % greater than in adults without disabilities and 38 % higher in children with disabilities compared to children without disabilities. Management of obesity in individuals with disabilities requires an interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach with the goal of decreasing weight, establishing an active and healthy lifestyle, and decreasing secondary health conditions associated with obesity.
