Abstract

This chapter will give an overview of research data on massage and touch. A systematic review (Chalmers and Altman, 1995) has not been undertaken and firm conclusions are therefore avoided. That said, considerable attention was paid to the methodological quality of the studies described. Readers unfamiliar with research techniques, and wishing to know more, are advised to consult a suitable textbook: Keeble (1995a, b) and McConway (1994) are recommended in particular.
