B-Cell Promoting Activity of Human Colostrum

Abstract

It is well known that human colostrum and milk contain different factors which provide passive immunization for newborn infants.1–3 However, recently it has been shown that human milk may serve as a mechanism by which active immunity can be transferred to the recipient newborn. Free secretory component (SC), lactoferrin, and S-IgA were described as suppressor factors in human colostrum.4–6 At the same time, clinical data suggest the presence in human colostrum and milk of factors, that enhance Ig production. In this paper we have assessed the effect of human colostrum on B cell function of mouse splenocytes. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) gel-filtration was employed to identify the fraction that associated with B cell-promoting activity of human colostrum.
