Abstract

We owe to the science of epidemiology the knowledge that a majority of human cancers relate to environmental factors. Thus, human cancers are, in a way, human-made and would appear to be preventable by human action as well. While human carcinogens were looked at in the past as specific agents, usually from an industrial source, it becomes increasingly apparent that most human cancers relate to multifactorial agents among which nutrition plays a dominant role. It has been estimated that the portion of total cancer incidence related to nutrition is 60% for women and greater than 40% for men. Present data clearly indicate that among the cancers that relate to nutritional factors is cancer of the colon.

This research was supported by USPHS Contract CP-33208 from National Cancer Institute and Grant CA-16382 from National Cancer Institute through the Large Bowel Cancer Project. This paper was presented as part of the Symposium on Nutrition and Chronic Diseases held under the auspices of The Nutrition Society of Canada at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, on June 23, 1978.
