Abstract

The great Indian embryologist Panchanan Maheshwari (1950) pointed out that until the end of the sixteenth century the occurrence of sex in plants was totally denied and even the mention of it was regarded as inappropriate and obscene. We know that in antiquity agricultural practices involved certain rites using pollen. The wellknown Assyrian relief of the dusting of pollen on the date palms by mythological figures shows a practice employed as a fertilization process — fertilization in its nutritional sense to make the crop more fertile.
