In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Growth

  • Chapter
Clinical In Vitro Fertilization

Abstract

Fertilization is the union of two highly specialized cells yielding a single cell with the development potential to give rise to a new individual. In order to achieve fertilization in vitro, oocytes must be obtained and handled in a manner which retains their viability, spermatozoa capable of fertilization must be collected and prepared, and both gametes placed together in an environment capable of retaining their function. Events occurring in the oocyte during its follicular life play a crucial role in determining the oocyte’s ability to undergo normal fertilization and development to live young. Successful IVF requires the recovery of an oocyte with full developmental potential and the maintenance of this viability during fertilization and growth in vitro.
