Oxygen Delivery and Consumption in the Critically Ill: Their Relation to the Development of Multiple Organ Failure

  • Chapter
Shock and the Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Part of the book series: Current Concepts in Critical Care ((CRITICAL CARE))

Abstract

Despite the many recent advances in intensive therapy, the development of multiple organ dysfunction associated with acute respiratory failure occurring as a consequence of septic shock or severe established sepsis continues to be associated with a poor prognosis (Ledingham et al. 1982; Bell et al. 1983; Andreadis and Petty 1985; Petty 1985; Seidenfeld et al. 1986; anonymous 1986a). Similarly, patients who suffer an episode of massive trauma with widespread tissue necrosis are also at risk of developing this syndrome with its attendant high mortality—even in the absence of overt sepsis (Baue 1975; Borzotta and Polk 1983; Faist et al. 1983).
