Abstract
The use of mechanical assistance devices in the management of shock is a subject which has received serious attention both in the literature and in clinical practice for two decades. The attraction of these techniques lies in their ability to improve haemodynamic status while minimizing the use of inotropes with their often detrimental effect on myocardial oxygen consumption. The current status of intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation and pneumatic anti-shock trousers is reviewed below.
