Abstract

In 1877, Sir James Paget described a generalised bone disease resulting in marked deformities and gave it the name ‘osteitis deformans’. Since this disease is not now considered to be an inflammatory condition and there may be little deformity, especially in individuals with monostotic disease, preference is given here to the name ‘Paget’s disease of bone’. There was some early confusion over similarities with osteitis fibrosa cystica before the two conditions were clearly defined. Important descriptions of Paget’s disease made earlier this century are those by Schmorl (1932) and Jaffe (1977).
