Using Workflow for Coordination in Groupware Applications

Abstract

Workflow is the Information Technology field that is concerned with the management of enterprises’ business processes. Unlike groupware, which cover both synchronous and asynchronous aspects of collaborative work, workflow is generally applied to asynchronous cases, and provides functions that are oriented towards coordination and organisation. Groupware is much more oriented towardscommunication and collaboration support. Because both types of system present complementary features, the tendency is towards the convergence of the two technologies. In particular, there is potential to exploit the coordination functions that workflow systems offer in groupware management. This article proposes a start in this direction.
