‘Somebody must have made a false accusation against Josef K., for he was arrested one morning without having done anything wrong’: in these stark and precise terms begins one of the most enigmatic and remarkable novels of the twentieth century, Franz Kafka’s Der Prozess, known to English readers, since the first wooden and often erroneous translation by Willa and Edwin Muir in 1935, as The Trial.1
