Abstract

Clues to modern usage of the term ‘commode’ may be found in Webster’s World Dictionary of the American Language and the Concise Oxford Dictionary. Historically the name given to a high head-dress worn by women in the late 17th century, a commode then was in turn, a chest of drawers, a chiffonier or movable low cupboard, a movable wash-stand and a piece of furniture containing a chamber pot. The term then became exclusively euphemistic for an armchair or box-shaped portable replacement for a WC.
