Kinetics of oxidation of neutralized glycollic acid by hexachloroiridate(IV)

Summary

The kinetics of oxidation of neutralized glycollic acid (GAH) by hexachloroiridate(IV) in sodium acetate-acetic acid buffer have been studied. Both kinetic and spectrophotometric results indicate that the reaction occurs through the formation of an intermediate complex between glycollate ion GA and [IrCl6]2−

$$\begin{gathered} {\text{ }} {\text{K }}\;{\text{ k}} \hfill \\ {\text{GA}}^ - + [{\text{IrCl}}_{\text{6}} ]^{2 - } \rightleftharpoons [{\text{IrCl}}_{\text{6}} ({\text{GA}})]^{3 - } \to {\text{products}} \hfill \\ {\text{ }}\;{\text{fast }}\;{\text{ slow}} \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$

The mechanism of the reaction leading to the formation of the reaction products is discussed and the activation parameters are reported.
