Abstract
This chapter provides an analysis of policies and practices relating to the teaching profession in South Asian countries in an attempt to map the profession. It looks at the present system of public education and teacher management (preservice training, recruitment, transfers, in-service professional development, and grievance redressal procedures) in India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, the Maldives, and Myanmar, with reference to colonial and precolonial times. It also tries to understand the status of the teaching profession in South Asia in the context of an expanding schooling system in the region.
