Abstract
This chapter is about leadership education for gifted students based on multicultural perspectives about leaders and leadership. Leadership has been identified as one form of giftedness since the Marland report (Marland, Education of the gifted and talented (Report to the Subcommittee on Education, Committee on Labor and Public Welfare, US Senate). Government Printing Office, Washington, DC, 1972), and there is an increased demand for gifted populations taking the leading role in the global society (Lee, Asia Pac Educ Rev 16(2): 307–316, 2015; Lee and Olszewski-Kubilius, Encyclopedia of Adolescence. Springer, New York, 2016). However, it is not clearly stated what kind of leadership is expected for the future world and what leadership roles are anticipated for gifted students. Since leadership and leaders’ roles vary over time and according to circumstances, leadership and leaders must be understood in a multifaceted manner. Only a few studies, however, have dealt with sociocultural issues in conceptualising leadership and encouraging leadership development for gifted students. The majority of the literature has documented perceptions about leadership from a Western perspective and lives of leading eminent people in Western societies. These are major limitations of leadership studies, which lead to a skewed view of leadership deemed the by-product of the Western cultures (Den Hartog and Dickson, The nature of leadership. Sage, Thousand Oaks, 2012). This chapter consists of two parts. First, we review the conception of leadership, types of leadership and leaders and leadership development from multicultural perspectives by addressing the issues of cultural dimensions of leadership. Second, using pilot study data garnered from a group of Korean gifted students and teachers, gifted students’ and teachers’ perceptions about leaders and leadership development are summarised.
