Abstract

Arborescent bamboos, seldom shrubby bamboos. Rhizomes sympodium. Culms caespitose, the apex erect; internodes terete, culm-walls usually thick; sheath-nodes prominent; culm-nodes flat. Branches several to many, with conspicuous and strong dominant branches, the secondary branchlets of the branches on the lower nodes shortened as thorns or not. Culm-sheaths leathery or cartilaginous, early or tardily deciduous; auricles large, seldom inconspicuous; ligules tall or short; blades large, erect, persistent, or deciduous. Branches with several leaves; blades small, papery, transverse veins inconspicuous. Inflorescences iterauctant; pseudospikelets solitary, or several to many clustered on nodes; florets 2 to several for each pseudospikelet, the upper 1 or 2 florets sterile, or incomplete florets present on the apex and bottom of the pseudospikelet, several bracts with buds at the base; rachilla disarticulated when ripe; glumes 1–3, sometimes absent; lemma several-veined, almost the same size in the fertile florets; palea as long as lemma, 2-keeled; lodicules 2 or 3, ciliate; stamens 6, filaments free; ovary petiolate, pubescent apically, style long or short, stigmas 3, seldom 1 or 2, plumose. Caryopses cylindrical, apex pubescent, with ventral grooves. New shoots summer to autumn.
