Abstract
What follows is more meditation (and mediation) than autobiography, although no less calculated. It intends to reach across boundaries. Several entry points come to mind, family; working class background in southeast Texas; schools; universities; teachers; wife of 50+ years and our sons; friends; jobs; students who may have thought their learning was unilateral; lecture tours, memorably in China, Egypt, India, and Vietnam; and blends of joys and sorrows. On reflection, none survives in its chronological order, and all become reconfigured when I dwell on them. There have been too many surprises to pretend I controlled the flow, much less planned it. Looking back, I see series, not linear or circular and definitely not progressive ones, but a shifting confluence of agencies, my own among them.
