Abstract

The basic goal of medicine is prevention. Dramatic and enormously helpful as is cure, for example by the antibiotics, the real triumph of medicine is in the virtual elimination of diseases — such as smallpox and typhoid. Prevention has been achieved by understanding the basic cause and combatting it.
