Abstract
Despite many advances in manufacturing process design,improvements in the approaches to design of production systems have lagged behind. In addition, many production requirements are difficult to satisfy because of process constraints originating from product design. This is due to product design’s lack of the necessary production system information to make design decisions that simultaneously meet both product requirements as well as production system requirements. Though a great deal of work in concurrent engineering has improved the understanding between product design and manufacturing process design, the relation between product design and design of the overall production system is not as well understood. A recent application of Axiomatic Design to production system design has shown the benefit of a quantitative and structured approach when designing for a general and diverse set of systems requirements. This paper describes the extension of this production system design to include process design and therefore allow the integration of product design. An example is given of the application of Axiomatic Design to compressor crankshaft design to illustrate the linking of requirements through a common process domain.
