Abstract
I accepted the invitation to contribute to this Festschrift for Carl Wellman with both great pleasure and some trepidation: The person being honoured has done so much thinking and writing in the field of legal and social philosophy and human rights, with such persuasion, conviction and commitment that I despair of finding an aspect that he has not put his mark on with his familiar characteristics. Yet I reminded myself that we are both cultivators in the same vineyard, albeit that I both lagged behind him and sought to learn from him. My work for this volume then is made easier by the clear and decisive path cut out by Carl Wellman.
