Abstract

Mount Baker (3284 m) is one of the ice-capped volcanoes in the Cascade Range. Many of the 13 glaciers on the mountain have oscillated two to three kilometres over the past century (e.g. Long, 1953). The mountain has a maritime climate. The precipitation at Mount Baker Lodge (1265 m), approximately 2800 mm a year, falls mainly as snow and sleet. The maximum snow cover of 4.5 to 6.1 m is reached in late March or early April (U.S. Weather Bureau, no date).
