Abstract

The small scale soil map accompanying this text (fig. 1) is a simplification of the fourth draft of the Fao/Unesco Soil Map of South America. It is very much generalised and is only meant to give a significant picture of the geographic distribution of the major soils in relation to their environment. Moreover, only a very small percentage of the map is based on systematic national soil surveys while the remaining part is the result of exploratory surveys and field soil correlation carried out to clarify the soil composition of selected areas in relation to other relevant data of the South American environment.
