Abstract
The Armorican orogeny abolished the last geosyncline in the British area. After it the nearest geosynclinal sea was on the site of what is now the Mediterranean and the Alps, a sea to which geologists have given the name Tethys. This was bordered, in the usual way, by shelf-seas whose constantly-changing shapes occupied central and northern Europe during the Mesozoic.
