Effluents from Alternative Demilitarization Technologies

Abstract

Preliminary mass balances are useful to begin to assess how to dispose of process effluents. Until relatively large-scale tests have been performed, it is not possible to accurately predict the concentrations of trace contaminants in the effluents. It will be these contaminants, and their level of concentration, that will determine if the effluent is ready for ultimate disposal or if further treatment is required. Further treatment could either involve more process equipment or shipping the effluent offsite to a commercial waste treatment facility. More detailed information is presented in a recent report entitled “Alternative Technologies for Destruction of the Chemical Weapons Stockpile,” F.W.
