Abstract

Recent observations have shown that Ly α forests are mostly associated with metal absorption lines at z ≈ 3 [Cowie et al. (1995); Songaila & Cowie (1996)]. Ly α forests are considered to arise from density fluctuations of the intergalactic medium (IGM). Observations suggest that the IGM is already polluted by metals at such high redshift. Since metals are produced only in stars in galaxies, a specific mechanism is needed to pollute the IGM. Galactic wind caused by supernova (SN) explosions carries metals into the IGM. Therefore, if sub-galactic objects are formed everywhere in the universe and expel metals at high redshifts, the IGM could be metal- enriched (Chiba & Nath (1997); Nath & Trenthan (1997)).
