Summary

In order to check the possibility of removing actinides from acidic waste solution produced by Italian fuel reprocessing experimental plants, we have investigated the use of Octyl(phenyl)-N, N-diisobutyl carbamoyl methyl phosphine oxide (CMPO) sorbed on supporting solid (SiO2) for the extraction of UO2 2+ and Pu4+ from nitric acid aqueous solutions.

We have determinated distribution coefficients (Kd), kinetics and sorption isotherms of this sorbent, briefly called SiC (Silica and CMPO) for each ion in nitric acid solutions (0.5+5N range). The Kd values show that SiC can be successfully used to separate actinides from nitric acid solution in liquid radioactive wastes decontamination as well as in radioanalytical determination.

SiC filled with 0.6 mmole of CMPO per gram of SiO2 shows, for UO2 2+, a good agreement with the molar ratio found by solvent extraction and with isotherm model at the same time.
