Abstract

Current drug therapy for functional gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders [e.g., irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), esophageal spasm] and other disorders (e.g., hypersecretory states, ulcers) of the GI tract has not been effective in many cases. Among the agents that are being used to treat motility disorders of the upper GI tract (e.g., esophageal spasm and achalasia) are metoclopramide, clebopride, domperidone, cholinomi-metics, and anticholinesterases. Anticholinergics, antispasmodics, opiates, manage IBS and other GI motility disorders (see. table 1)
