Abstract
It is characteristic of great philosophical systems that they often begin with a very simple, or even a banal, observation, which, thanks to the genius of a philosopher who can see in this banality more than strikes the eye, is raised to the rank of a fundamental human dilemma. The Meditations begin with just such a simple observation.
