Abstract

Along with the numerous apotheoses, eulogies, hymns and odes paying homage to Jean-Jacques Rousseau during the period 1784–1834 appeared also nine episodic plays of which seven were published. The dramatists, especially during the Revolutionary decade, deemed it a sacred duty to bestow upon Jean-Jacques the honors they considered he was denied during his life. Their episodic plays, though written very spasmodically, can be arranged into a chronological sequence of Rousseau portraits in dramatic form.
