Abstract

The dominant transport and chemical processes controlling the distribution of minor species — particularly ozone — in the stratosphere and mesosphere were discussed. Emphasis was placed on identifying the regions in which particular reaction cycles involving OX, ClX, HOX and NOX are dominant and feedback effects that may occur when sources of these species are altered. In particular, the implications of recent measurements of height profiles for O, OH, N2O and HCl were discussed, as well as such interactions as ClO with NO and ClO with N2O to form ClON2O. The question of the terrestrial sources and sinks of N2O and CH4 was addressed. Finally, the factors controlling the distribution of hydrogen species in the stratosphere and the mesosphere were related to the escape of hydrogen.
