Abstract
A comprehensive bibliography of astronomical catalogues for the period 1951–1975 inclusive containing over 2000 items and including an index of designations has shown that there is an urgent need to control the use of designation notation. It is suggested that a small data base, similar to the one created for this bibliography could serve as a useful guide to the assignment and subsequent citation of catalogued objects. This in turn would help those compiling inverted files of stellar objects such as the Catalog of Stellar Identifications.
